A pressure test answers one question: does this section hold. Isolate it, pressurise it, and watch the gauge.
It rules sections out fast, which is what turns a whole-house search into a two-metre one. More at Leak Detection Cape Town.
Tell us which areas are suspect and whether the house has isolating valves.

- Isolate a section at the valves.
- Pressurise with water or air and record the starting reading.
- Hold and watch. A dropping gauge proves a leak in that section.
- Repeat down the branches until the failing run is isolated.
- Locate the exact point acoustically or thermally within that run.
Also Used for Compliance
Pressure testing is part of a plumbing certificate inspection and of most new installations before they are closed up. In Cape Town it also settles the pressure-reducing valve question, since mains pressure regularly exceeds the 400 kPa the by-law allows at the cylinder.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African leak detection and plumbing pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform.
Homes without isolating valves cost more to test, because the plumber has to create isolation points before the testing itself can begin.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pressure should my plumbing hold?
The City of Cape Town water by-law requires no more than 400 kPa at the hot water cylinder, and mains pressure in many suburbs runs well above that. A missing or failed pressure-reducing valve is one of the most common compliance failures.
Can a pressure test damage old pipes?
It is done at working pressure, not beyond it, so it does not create damage. It can reveal a joint that was already failing, which is the point of doing it.
Does a passed test mean there is no leak?
It means that section holds. If the meter still moves, the leak is on a section not yet tested, which is exactly how the search narrows.
